Why Does Rust Come Back After a Car Body Repair?

Rust is one of the most frustrating problems for vehicle owners. Even when a rust repair looks perfect, corrosion can eventually start to show through again.

So why does this happen?

The simple answer is that rust is corrosion of the metal itself. Once corrosion takes hold, it can spread deeper into the metal or start from the back of a panel. As a result, removing the rust you can see on the surface doesn’t always remove every trace of it.

What causes rust on a car?

Rust develops when bare metal reacts with moisture and oxygen. Road salt, stone chips, scratches and damaged paintwork all let moisture reach the metal under the protective paint layers.

In Scotland, our wet weather and winter road salt create ideal conditions for corrosion. That’s why it pays to fix stone chips and scratches before they get worse.

Why can rust come back after a rust repair?

What you can see on the outside of a panel may only be part of the problem.

Corrosion can hide in tiny pits within the metal. It can also continue from behind a panel, around seams or in places you can’t reach from the painted surface. So even after we remove, treat and refinish the visible rust, it may come back if corrosion remains elsewhere in the metal.

This is why a rust repair is very different from fixing a simple scratch, scuff or dent.

Can rust ever be permanently fixed?

For severe corrosion, the best long-term fix is often to cut out the affected metal and weld in new metal. In some cases, the whole panel needs replacing.

That is much more involved than a cosmetic SMART repair.

For minor surface corrosion, we may be able to remove and treat the affected area before refinishing it. However, no cosmetic repair can guarantee that rust will never return. This is especially true where rust has already eaten deeper into a panel.

Why we are honest about rust repair

At SmartAyr Repairs, we’d rather be upfront with customers about what we can realistically achieve.

SMART repair techniques work brilliantly on many types of cosmetic damage, such as scratches, bumper scuffs and minor paintwork damage. Rust, however, behaves differently because the problem can extend beyond the area you can see.

If we think corrosion needs a more extensive bodywork repair, we’ll explain this. We won’t promise a permanent cosmetic fix that may not last.
